What Are Dental Crowns?

A dental crown is a type of cap that encircles the tooth. Most often a crown is used to restore a damaged tooth, but crowns can also be utilized to enhance the appearance of a smile. A crown can be made up of three different materials– all-ceramic, ceramic-on-metal and all-metal. The location of the crown in the teeth will ultimately determine the appropriate material to use. For instance, front teeth typically need to have an all-ceramic crown because it looks the most natural. Patients may often utilize ceramic-on-metal crowns because they appear natural but have the durability of metal.

What Are Dental Bridges?

A dental bridge can be used to replace a missing tooth. Here at Sharma Dental Center we provide patients with dental bridges if they desire to replace a missing tooth without undergoing surgery or wearing dentures. Two crowns are used to hold the dental bridge in place. The bridge appears natural and is made up of a porcelain or ceramic material to align with the surrounding teeth. Our team of dental professionals will make sure that the new tooth feels and looks incredible

Before The Procedure

If you are getting a dental bridge or dental crowns mainly for cosmetic reasons, we recommend that you whiten your teeth prior to the procedure. We offer complete teeth whitening procedures that will improve the appearance of your smile in quick, easy fashion. Keep in mind that it is important to have the teeth whitening procedure performed first because the material that bridges and crowns are made out of are both bleach and stain resistant. This means that if either is molded to match yellow teeth, the crown or bridge will remain yellow even if at a later date you have your teeth whitened. When you undergo the teeth whitening procedure first, your new bridge or crown will be made to match your resplendent new white teeth.

The Process

In preparation for the procedure, we recommend that patients take at least a day off work. You may want to take a few days off if possible. It is typical for the teeth to be somewhat sensitive, and it is easier if you don’t have to fret about keeping up with your busy schedule or meeting clients.

When getting dental bridges and dental crowns installed, it is recommended that you work with a professional cosmetic dentist that understands how to complete the procedure in such a way that looks natural. We at Sharma Dental Center can do so while simultaneously working to keep our patients as comfortable as possible by utilizing sedation dentistry. The process for each procedure is very similar. Before getting underway, an impression of the teeth is taken in order for the new bridge or crown to be created in a dental lab.

When fixating a dental crown around a tooth, our team of dental professionals begin by preparing the tooth. It is required that we remove a portion of the enamel so that there is ample room for the new crown to encircle the tooth without pushing the other teeth out of place. Once this is completed, we will thoroughly clean the tooth and attach a temporary crown to it by using removable glue. Patients will typically wear a temporary crown for a period of around two weeks while waiting for the lab to create the permanent one. It is important to be careful with what foods you eat and how you go about brushing your teeth since the temporary one is designed to come off.

Patients will return to our Dublin office once the dental restoratives are complete so that we can remove all the temporaries and attach the permanent ones to the tooth. If the patient is receiving a dental crown, we will use dental bonding to secure the cap around the tooth and complete it through. If the patient is receiving a dental bridge, a crown will be placed on both the teeth surrounding the missing one. On the very top of the crown there is a piece that looks like natural gums that will bond the new tooth in place. These two crowns will serve as anchors for this synthetic “bridge” and makes a new tooth as durable as possible. Patients depend on this procedure as a reliable process of replacing missing teeth in a fashion that appears natural and restores the functionality of the missing tooth.
